1. Video Tutorials. If you are new to beat making software, I believe it is essential for whichever program you use, that it includes a video of someone using it. When I first started making beats using software, I experienced a couple of programs, and the ones that did not include videos, were the ones that I did not do well in. If you're a person that learns faster by watching someone do something, then video tutorials is a necessity.
2. Refunds. I believe that if a beat making software does not meet your needs, you should receive a full refund. Now you can't use the software for a year, and then realize you don't like it want a refund. When you first purchase it, learn and use it as much as you can early. That way, if you think it does not meet your satisfaction, you can receive a refund. Any valuable service or product shouldn't have any problem offering refunds if their product is resourceful.
3. Referrals. Research online and/or with other producers that have used the software you are thinking about purchasing. The software I used was very cheap...less than bucks and I highly recommend it. But before I purchased it, I shopped around to see what other producers were saying about the product. It got rave reviews. So don't just count on the sales page of the product. Research thoroughly.
